The Turnaround in Brazil Propelled by Young Voters Who Reelected Lula To a 4th Term
We begin with the surprising turnaround in Brazil after Lula lost the first round of elections three weeks ago by 2.2 million votes to his decisive win on Sunday of 51.79% to Bolsonaro’s 48.21%. Needless to say the son of the former Brazilian president now under house arrest for his coup attempt four years ago is also refusing to concede. Joining us from São Paulo, Brazil to discuss the role of young voters in propelling Lula’s victory is James Green, Professor Emeritus of Brazilian History and Culture at Brown University and the President of the Board of Directors of the Washington Brazil Office. He has worked on issues related to Brazil for 50 years and is the author or co-editor of 13 books related to Brazil and Latin America including the new edition of Brazil: Five Centuries of Change.
The Historical Record on Midterm Elections and History’s Verdict of Trump as America’s Worst Ever President
Then we look into the historical record of midterm elections going against the party in control of the White House as well as the likelihood that history will rank Donald Trump as America’s worst president but like Nixon exiting the White House in disgrace, he will still have the support of a third of the country. Joining us is Allan Lichtman, a political historian who teaches at American University and has studied both the American right and the presidency. The author of The Case For Impeachment and The Keys to the White House: A Surefire Way to Predicting the Next President, his prediction system has correctly predicted the outcomes of all US presidential elections between 1984 and 2020. His recent books include The Embattled Vote in America and Thirteen Cracks: Repairing American Democracy After Trump, and his latest book just out is Great American Presidents: The Twelve Who Transformed the Nation and he has a weekly show at 9pm EST on Tuesdays and Thursdays at @allanlichtmanyoutube.
