Background Briefing: October 7, 2025
On the Second Anniversary of the October 7 Massacre: The Role of $21.7 Billion in U.S. Military Aid
We begin with the anniversary of the horrific attack on Israel by Hamas against mostly civilians two years ago and assess the role of the U.S. in enabling so much death and destruction that has followed, given the alacrity with which the Biden and Trump administrations supplied Israel with weapons in contrast to the way Biden dribbled in arms to Ukraine and Trump has cut off arms deliveries to a country invaded by its Russian neighbor in a war in which over a million have died so far. Joining us is William Hartung, a Senior Research Fellow at the Quincy Institute. His books include, How Much Are You Making on the War Daddy? A Quick and Dirty Guide to War Profiteering in the Bush Administration, Lessons from Iraq: Avoiding the Next War, and Prophets of War: Lockheed Martin and the Making of the Military-Industrial Complex, and he has a new report at Responsible Statecraft co-authored with the Costs of War Project at Brown University, “$21.7 billion in US military aid has fueled Israel’s war on Gaza.”
The Trump Judge Who Blocked His Deployment to Portland Saying “This is a Nation of Constitutional Law, Not Martial Law”
Then we examine Trump’s transparent attempt to provoke an insurrection to justify invoking the Insurrection Act which he is itching to do so that ICE and military deployments can shut down the next election Trump surely knows he and the Republicans will lose. Joining us to discuss how the Trump-appointed U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut has halted Trump’s deployment to Portland saying “This is a nation of Constitutional law, not martial law,” is Garrett Epps is the Legal Affairs Editor at The Washington Monthly. He taught Constitutional Law at the University of Baltimore Law School and Oregon University Law School as well as American University, Boston College, and Duke University. He served for ten years as Supreme Court Correspondent of The Atlantic, and his latest article at The Washington Monthly we will discuss is, “The Judge Standing up to Trump’s Portland Invasion.”
Cory Doctorow on How the Digital World Has Turned to S**T
Then finally we speak with Cory Doctorow, a science fiction author, activist and journalist whose many books include The Lost Cause, a solarpunk science-fiction novel of hope amidst the climate emergency, The Internet Con: How to Seize the Means of Computation and Chokepoint Capitalism. He is a Professor at Large at Cornell University, an MIT Media Lab Research Affiliate, as well as a Professor of Computer Science at Open University. His latest book, just out, is Enshittification: Why Everything Suddenly Got Worse and What to Do About It which exposes how the promise of the digital world has turned to s**t, as tech giants lock in users then turn them over to their business customers then claw back all the value from their business customers to themselves.
