Background Briefing: September 22, 2025
Does Recognizing Palestine Create an Illusion of Action to End the Agony in Gaza?
We begin with Australia, the UK and Canada calling for a Palestinian state and a two-state solution over the weekend followed by France, Portugal and Malta today with Germany likely to join, while 150 other nations already recognize Palestine in the UN General Assembly. We discuss the concern that recognizing Palestine creates the illusion that something is being done to end the agony in Gaza when what is needed from Western governments is an arms embargo. Joining us is Ahmed Moor, a writer and fellow at the Foundation for Middle East Peace whose work has appeared in Al Jazeera, The Nation, the London Review of Books, and The Boston Review. He is the co editor of After Zionism: One State for Israel and Palestine and has a recent article at The Guardian, “Palestinians don’t need a state. We need justice.”
Massive Demonstrations Across Brazil Against Pardoning Bolsonaro and How We Should Have Jailed Trump After His Coup Attempt
Then, following massive demonstrations across Brazil over the weekend against calls in the Congress to pardon Bolsonaro as well as giving lawmakers immunity from prosecution, we will look into how Brazil is an example of what should have happened here after the January 6 coup attempt when the Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told the Democrats how to put Trump in jail for his crimes against our democracy just as Lula has done with Bolsonaro’s 27 year sentence for his coup attempt after he lost an election. Joining us is Andre Pagliarini, a Professor of History and International Studies at Louisiana State University, Fellow at the Washington Brazil Office, and a non-resident expert at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. He is the author of the new book, Lula: A People’s President and the Fight for Brazil’s Future, and he has an article at Jacobin, “Bolsonaro Is Finished. But Bolsonarismo Remains a Threat.”
Trump Spews Hatred at Charlie Kirk’s Memorial After Kirk’s Widow Invokes Her Christian Faith to Forgive Her Husband’s Murderer
Then finally, with Trump saying loudly at the memorial service for Charlie Kirk that he hates his enemies in contrast to Kirk’s widow who invoked the Bible and her Christian faith to forgive the murder of her husband, we will assess whether Christians on the right, in the center and on the left can bridge the gaping political divide in this country. Joining us is Will Bunch, a national opinion columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer and author of several books, including The Backlash: Right-Wing Radicals, Paranoia Politics and High-Def Hucksters in the Age of Obama, and The Bern Identity: A Search for Bernie Sanders and the New American Dream. He has won numerous journalism awards and shared the Pulitzer Prize for spot news reporting and his latest article at the Philadelphia Inquirer is “Trump regime shredded the First Amendment in forcing Jimmy Kimmel off the air. Our ‘leaders’ still don’t get it.”
