Background Briefing: January 27, 2026
The Influence of Nazi Slogans and White Supremacist Anthems Inside Trump’s White House, DHS and Department of Labor
We begin with the influence of white supremacy inside the Trump White House, DHS and Department of Labor and assess the extent to which ICE and CBP recruitment has reached out to white nationalists with not-so-coded dog whistles of Nazi slogans and white supremacist anthems. Joining us is Dr. Jessie Daniels, a professor of sociology at Hunter College, CUNY, where she is the former director of the master’s program in Applied Digital Sociology. She is also a faculty associate at Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center. An internationally recognized expert on race, racism, and the internet, Daniels has spent more than 25 years studying white supremacy and far-right movements in media and online spaces, and has presented her work to the United Nations. She is the author of several influential books, including White Lies, Cyber Racism, and Nice White Ladies, and she is quoted in an article at The New York Times, “Administration Social Media Posts Echo White Supremacist Messaging.”
AG Bondi’s Attempt to Extort Voter Rolls From Minnesota to End ICE Terror
Then we examine AG Bondi’s apparent attempt at extorting the State of Minnesota to hand over voter rolls if they want DHS to back off their terror tactics with the invasion of Minneapolis by ICE and CBP. Joining us is Richard Hasen, Professor of Law and Political Science at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is a nationally-recognized expert in election law and campaign finance regulation and he served as founding co-editor of the quarterly peer-reviewed publication, Election Law Journal. He’s also the author of a number of books including The Voting Wars, Plutocrats United, The Justice of Contradictions, and Election Meltdown. His latest book is A Real Right to Vote: How a Constitutional Amendment Can Safeguard American Democracy.
The Government’s Killing of an American Citizen With a Concealed Carry Permit Has Rattled NRA and Gun Rights Advocates
Then finally we speak with Joshua Horwitz, the Dana Feidler professor of the practice and co-director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions. He has spent more than three decades working on gun violence prevention issues and is the author of Guns, Democracy and the Insurrectionist Idea. We discuss concerns among the gun rights advocates and NRA members over the killing of an American citizen with a concealed carry permit by Federal officers which has turned the notion of their Second Amendment argument on its head since the government is not protecting gun rights but instead is making possession of a gun a death penalty.
