Then finally we examine rising tensions and fears of a military clash on the border between Belarus and Poland where refugees are being used as pawns by the dictator of Belarus Lukashenko who is under severe sanctions from the EU with the European Commission now accusing him of an “inhuman, gangster-style approach” to the migrants. Joining us is David Marples, the Distinguished University Professor in the Department of History & Classics at the University of Alberta and the author of The Lukashenko Phenomenon: Elections, Propaganda, and the Foundations of Political Authority in Belarus, Prospects for Democracy in Belarus, and his latest book, Understanding Ukraine and Belarus.
