Will the Shooting of 2 National Guardsmen in Washington D.C. Provide Trump With an Excuse to Invoke the Insurrection Act For Example?

We begin the breaking news of a shooting in the nation’s capitol of National Guardsmen from West Virginia that just happened with the apparent shooter wounded and in hospital but no more details of the suspect and possible motives yet available as we go to air. Joining us from Washington D.C. is Adele Stan, an independent journalist and longtime chronicler of the right wing of U.S. politics. A winner of the Hillman Prize in Opinion & Analysis Journalism, her work has appeared in Mother Jones, The Nation, and The American Prospect as well as on the op-ed pages of The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times. We discuss what we know so far about this shooting of 2 of the 2,000 troops Trump has sent to patrol the streets of the nation’s capitol and what Trump and the shadow president Stephen Miller might do to take advantage of this tragedy by invoking the Insurrection Act for example.

A Warning to the American Press From the Filmmaker of a Powerful New Feature Documentary About Brave Young Russian Women Reporting the Truth as Putin Shuts Down Independent Media and Criminalizes Journalism

Then we speak with Julia Loktev, a Russian–American film director, screenwriter, and video artist. She was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, and immigrated to the U.S. at age 9. Her award-winning films include “The Loneliest Planet,” “Day Night Day Night,” and “Moment of Impact.” A recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and an Emerging Icons Award from the George Eastman Museum, her new documentary is “My Undesirable Friends: Part I – Last Air in Moscow” which opens in Los Angeles on November 28th at the Laemmle Royal and in San Francisco on December 13th at The Roxie Theater. We explore the similarities to the brave young journalists in Russia trying to report the truth as Putin shuts down what is left of the independent media in Russia and criminalizes any mention of his war on Ukraine to the creeping authoritarianism in America as Trump intensifies his war on the press and his oligarchs buy up the press to turn CBS News and possibly CNN into the “Pravdas” of the regime and the Republican Party just like Fox News.
