The Supreme Court Upholds Birthright Citizenship but Kavanaugh Shows Congress How to Undo it

We begin with today’s 6-3 Supreme Court ruling upholding birthright citizenship under the 14th Amendment based on the 1898 landmark ruling in U.S. vs Wong Kim Ark who was born in San Francisco but upon returning from a trip to China, was denied entry under the Chinese Exclusion Act. Joining us is Mae Ngai, Professor of History and Lung Family Professor of Asian American Studies and a Professor of History at Columbia University. A legal and political historian interested in questions of immigration, citizenship, and nationalism, she is author of Impossible Subjects: Illegal Aliens and the Making of Modern America, and her latest book is The Chinese Question: The Gold Rushes and Global Politics.

Joining us is Dr. Henry Abraham, who has served as Unit Chief of the Westboro State Hospital, Director of Psychiatric Research at the St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Boston, who has also served as a consultant to the National Academy of Sciences, and as advisor for several revisions of the Diagnostic Manual of the American Psychiatric Association. A member of Physicians for Social Responsibility and the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, he shared in the award of the Nobel Peace Prize and is a signatory to an open letter from leading mental health professionals, “A Statement of Medical Concern about the President of the United States.”
